Welcome to virtual Grandparents day!!! I wish we could be all together. Because we can’t this year, I have put together a video for all our Hedding Grandparents to enjoy. We had a lot of student participation and I am so thankful that so many parents sent in pictures and quotes for me to use. If you happen to miss the deadline please feel free to post your pictures and quotes in the comments to honor your grandparents. I hope you enjoy watching. Mrs Rakestraw. https://youtu.be/DeUy0bc-uz0

After the first two weeks of the new traffic pattern on Latimer Street in front of Hedding, parents and staff have reported how smoothly the transition to a one way has been and how much less chaotic it is for drop off in the morning and pick up after school. As such, our students are safer. Thank you to parents, community members, Chief Cates and the Abingdon Police Department and Dr. Curry and our school board for making this change happen and be successful. Just a reminder to those dropping off and picking up, please make sure not to block driveways of houses on Latimer and Swartz when parking, and make sure to not park in red zones, where the curb in painted red. Thank you again for your cooperation to make before and after school safer for our students.

This is a reminder that all students have packets of class work and/or online instruction and work to provide as much continuity to learning for our students when they are out due to circumstances out of our control, like this winter weather. Students are expected to complete the work sent home and return it to school or submit online the next day we have school. Teachers have included a note with the packets with contact information in case students or parents have any questions or need clarification concerning any of the work sent home.

There will be no school tomorrow due to freezing temps., high winds and poor road conditions. All K through 5 Hedding students were given packets of class work to complete in the event of another missed day due to weather. Please read the attached letter which explains the new Illinois legislation which allows for school attendance days to be defined by the district as long as students are participating in learning for a portion of the day. Each teacher has included a note with contact information in case parents or students have any questions.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact until February 15, 2019. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. If at least 20 percent of Hedding Grade School parents complete this survey, a parent supplement report will also be generated. The parent data will not be reported on the State Report Card. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.

Today I was lucky enough to take 6 4th graders to Galesburg to visit the birthplace of Carl Sandburg. We took our collected pennies, which totaled $1195.52 which we collected from all grades at Hedding. We also presented information about what we have learned about Carl Sandburg. It was a nice experience for those students.
